Interpreting Studies as a Discipline: A New Conception
by Zhong Weihe & Wang Binhua (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou, China) p.7

Abstract: Emerging in the 1950s and undergoing a period of fast development in the past two decades, the studies of interpreting remains confronted however with two critical issues in its pursuit of disciplinary status: how it should be positioned vis-à-vis its neighboring disciplines; and what shape its conceptual framework ought to take to ensure its continued growth. This article proposes that interpreting studies be conceived as a (sub)discipline within Translation Studies, and that its disciplinary framework be made up primarily of four components: theoretical assumptions about its own epistemology and methodology, and practical understandings of the objects and approaches for its research.

Theoretical Innovations and Practical Applicability: "Faithfulness," "Expressiveness" and "Elegance" as Translation Criteria in Action
by Liu Yunhong & Xu Jun (Nanjing University, Nanjing, China) p.13

Abstract: Whereas translation scholars have succeeded in reaching agreements on many fundamental issues in their field, whether these consensuses are all relevant to and applicable in real-life situations of translation practices deserves a careful examination. A reality check reveals that many of the seemingly-solved problems or the seemingly-unified thoughts have not been generally recognized or implemented in the actual practices of translating. A case in point is the discrepancy between theorists’ shared understanding of the tripartite criterion of “faithfulness,” “expressiveness” and “elegance” and its popular application in the assessment of translation in many practical fields. Taking notice of the gap, this paper seeks to rethink the criterion in question from a perspective that combines theoretical insights and practical imperatives and is sufficiently informed with the tension between the two.

Translating National Character: Taking the Late Qing Chinese Translations of Robinson Crusoe for an Example
by Cui Wendong (The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China) p. 19

Abstract: Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is marred by his racist prejudices against the Chinese, and yet this novel became surprisingly popular in late Qing China, and as many as three Chinese versions of it were published. What accounts for its popularity at that time is the then on-going process whereby the Chinese intellectuals subjected their own culture to a severe criticism in an effort to re-mold their “national character.” To arouse a spirit of self-criticism and self-innovation among the Chinese people, the translators rewrote the discourse of racism in the original into the discourse of national character in the translations by selectively preserving, deleting and adding information. While they had thus made significant impact on self-transformation of the Chinese culture, however, these translators all subscribed to the authority of colonial culture and thus contributed to the asymmetrical power relations between China and the West.

Emotion-derived Sense of Pleasure in Literary Works and Its Re-creation in Translation
by Xie Jianping(Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, Hangzhou, China) p. 29

Abstract: Emotion-derived sense of pleasure has as its source an increasingly deepening and interactive psychological process that goes from sensation to thinking, and from association to emotion, resulting eventually in volitional action. To generate such a sense, literature demands that its writers first enter the right kind of emotional state by activating what they have experienced in life before they enter the process of creative writing. This paper offers a multiple-perspective analysis of the key principles with which the translator’s efforts to re-create the said sense of pleasure in literary translation should be guided.

Evoking Ideo-imagery in the Translation of Classical Chinese Poetry: Toward a More Rationally Based Interpretation of the Source Text
by Bao Tongfa & Yang Li (Jiangnan University , Wuxi, China) p. 34

Abstract: Yijing (意境, Ideo-imagery) is characterized by an evocation of vivid images informed with an intangible aesthetic sense in the process of reading Classical Chinese poetry. Since the yijing-oriented poetic appreciation develops out of and is deeply rooted in China’s unique traditional modes of philosophy, cognition and culture, it is of great significance for translators concerned to explore systematically the interrelationship among the emotion, the scene and the cognitive subject involved. Such an effort would provide a healthy check against excessively subjective interpretation of the source text and would hence add to the rational basis of the translation in question.
Key words: yijing (ideo-imagery); cognitive rationale; verification; poetic rationale; presentation

The Compilation and Application of Chinese-English Conference Interpreting Corpus
by Hu Kaibao & Tao Qing (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China) p. 49

Abstract: The compilation of Chinese-English Conference Interpreting Corpus is of great practical importance for the research of interpreting theory and practice, for with the corpus serving as a research platform, it becomes possible to conduct studies on the translation universals in Chinese-English conference interpreting and on the linguistic features of the interpreted English as well. Yet to compile such a corpus is a complicated and time-consuming task, since it involves transcribing, parsing, tagging, annotating and aligning large amount of Chinese and English texts. Even though many of the difficulties encountered in the project have been successfully dealt with, much remains to be done before it could be turned into an effective tool of research.

Constructing Teaching-oriented Parallel Corpora to Facilitate a Comparative Approach to Translation Pedagogy
by Yu Jun & Wang Zhaohui (Xiamen University of Technology, Xiamen, China) p. 57

Abstract: This paper discusses the construction and application of teaching-oriented corpora for translation courses. It holds that involving the students in this endeavor and taking into consideration the courses’ general approach and overall structure are essential to a successful building and application of such corpora. Technical problems encountered in the effort, such as those concerning the text types, the corpus tagging, the constructive procedure and the application of the corpora to be built, are also discussed in detail in the paper.
